"For whereas the mind works in possibilities, the intuitions work in actualities, and what you intuitively desire, that is possible to you. Whereas what you mentally or "consciously" desire is nine times out of ten impossible; hitch your wagon to star, or you will just stay where you are." -- D. H. Lawrence

I'm generally not one for teaser pictures, but I chose this picture which is part of a wedding set that I will be blogging soon, as today's Pic[k] of the Day. Perhaps though it is nothing more than a preamble to a sweet love story told in 1/60 of a second frames, in this case what is true of an artistic pondering is also true of life. I love this picture especially. Not for artistic or technical merits, but because every time I see it I am reminded that obstacles, nor matter how big or small, can and should always be used to our advantage. No matter what stands between ourselves and our goals, aspirations, dreams, and even our cameras and subjects, it is nothing more than an obstruction of our vision. It is not that we have allowed an obstacle to impede our development, but simply how we respond to those obstructions when they hinder our progress, that defines us.

"I think photographs should be provocative and not tell you what you already know. It takes no great powers or magic to reproduce somebody's face in a photograph. The magic is in seeing people in new ways." --Duane Michals

This morning I was entirely unsure which picture I wanted to choose for my Pic[k] of the day. As the day wore on with weather I quickly deemed "too cold" upon stepping outside my front door, I noticed a pattern. The arctic air brings out two things: coats and cuddlers. Everywhere I went today I saw beach loving Floridians bundled up in winter coats, scarves, hats, and even gloves. And at the same time, couples, young and old, trying to stay warm together; replacing words they might not remember later with affection.

Of course, I, being me, immediately wished I had my Canon on hand to capture such sweet moments. So instead, I give you a less immediate view of love. And maybe it's not holding hands on a stroll through the park young love, but it is I'm never going to leave your side love...matching hats, rascal scooters, pinwheels and all.

It's I want to grow old with you love.

I struggled with an appealing way of introducing this post. Wanting partially to take on the highschool freshman approach with an "I heart shoes...Melani shoessss." At the same time, while I really do love shoes, Antonio Melani is only but a small piece to a, dare I say it, bigger picture.

Sometimes I forget to take pictures just for the sake of doing it; because it's what I love. I don't always make the time to experiment like I did when I first got my camera. Lately, I've been feeling the need to pack up my camera and favorite lenses and just drive somewhere around the city and see what I can find. And while, yes, I have so many events and shoots to blog as of now, I'm making a case for the just because photos. The pictures we catch on the fly. The shots we don't set up or compose. The "in-the-right-place-at-the-right-time" photos that become favorites, signatures, and part of fabulous Kolo albums that are laced with black pages and cream corners.

So I give you the attempt to make a better artist and a better shot. I give you the no restrictions approach that has left me the recipient of a few "you're crazy lady"s from time to time, as I hang from the rafters, lay on the ground, or am lifted by a wire to get that perfect, balcony-style wide angle. :) I give you the Pic[k] of the Day.

This shot was taken last weekend at a wedding with Alison Miller In St. Augustine. Though the last shot of the day that I took, having all the experimental elements that I love, it quickly became my favorite. And of course, who wouldn't love those fabulous sapphire Antonio Melani shoes?

There is nothing like following up a long overdue post with another one. Funny how sometimes when we make the "never again" vow, we find ourselves distinctively in the same situation. Let's be honest-it's a blog eat blog world (wide web). Can I make that promise that I'll be faithful to post on a regular basis for better or for worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health? I could, but I might not follow through. Yes, the commitment to blog is not to be entered into lightly or unadvisedly. The "I have a blog" honeymoon is over eventually, and then we have to remind ourselves that the word blog is both a noun and a verb. So here is my desperate attempt to reclaim my blog from a post-honeymoon slump. Will I be successful? Perhaps. Maybe the key is to remember that commitment is only half of the battle. Promising to act, and actually acting are two different things.

I had the privilege of meeting my new friends from The First Coast Wind Ensemble at October's Art Walk.
They are such a talented group of guys. It was a pleasure meeting them and spending some time with their group to capture a few photos!

I loved the "fedora"ish hats these guys wore as part of their uniforms! So classy!!

Thanks to The First Coast Wind Ensemble for allowing me to hang out with them at October's Art Walk. Hope to see you again soon!
